Serve

Serve

“Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

Mark 10:45 points us to the source of our compassion, our energy, our motivation when it comes to service: Jesus. Jesus's service of us moves us to love as we have been loved, and teaches us to love as we have been loved: freely, without holding back.

As we are seeking to be a church not just for ourselves, we are inviting you to consider how you might serve with your gifts, time, energy, and money— as we more meaningfully seek to be in and for our neighborhoods. There are a few specific options below, and here is a directory created by the All Souls community as a menu of organizations with which to partner. If you would like help discerning your gifting and which opportunities are a good fit for you, contact Kara.

Foster Care

By becoming a foster parent, or by supporting foster parents, you provide children and youth with a safe, loving, temporary home and make it possible for them to stay in school and pursue health in difficult family situations. All Souls’ own Nancy Spiro is a coordinator for Foster Care in our community and a great person to talk to as you are exploring how you might serve through foster care. Contact Nancy.

Gun Violence

Learn more about how to participate in interrupting the increase of gun violence in Seattle. A regional effort to keep the peace is enfolding and this video is a good introduction to the work. Check out local organizations like Community Passageways and restorative justice efforts like Collective Justice.

Incarcerated Adults

Begin a pen pal relationship with someone currently serving time. All Souls' own Chris Ball is helping to coordinate a group of people to reach out to and support incarcerated adults at a critical moment in their lives. Find out more about how you can participate. Contact Chris.

Racial Justice

When George Floyd was murdered, All Souls began gathering regularly to pray, to learn, and to encourage each other to act justly. Led by Carolyn March, we read Esau McCaulley's "Reading While Black" as a foundation and introduction and are currently exploring our Bishop Todd Hunter's Center for Formation, Justice, and Peace. Join us in this ongoing formation with fellow All Souls neighbors. Contact Carolyn March.

Teen Mothers

Becoming a mother is a massive threshold in life and made even more daunting when a teenager still trying to finish their education while learning to be a parent. YoungLives provides a network of support to teen moms. All Souls' own Crissa Parsley formerly directed that work here and currently, Alyssa Reeve is our main point of contact. You can talk to both of them to learn more. Contact Alyssa to get involved.
