Racial Justice

Racial Justice

We are calling our community to prayerfully act in response to the personal and systemic racism in our country.

On Monday, May 24th, our nation suffered another murder of a black brother due to police brutality in the black community. George Floyd, a 46-year old African American citizen of Minneapolis and father of two daughters, was choked to death by a white officer of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Our African American brothers and sisters are angry, anxious, and fearful due to a pattern of brutality that reveals personal prejudice and systemic racial injustice in our society. Many of us are asking what has changed since Demetrius DuBose, since Breonna Taylor, since Eric Gardner, since Emmett Till, since the first black body bearing God’s image was humiliated as a commodity.

God is not silent on these issues and the All Souls community will not be either. Loving our neighbors as ourselves is costly work. Our leadership will be initiating conversations about All Souls’ place in addressing the historic and ongoing cost in the black community of racist actions of individuals, policies and institutions.

Many of us are praying and reflecting on how, as brothers and sisters in Christ alongside our black brothers and sisters, we can both learn and act in a way that is gracious, present, and hospitable in this time. Let’s walk together in faith, encouraging one another and spurring one another on towards good works.

Listen and Learn from Black Perspectives

This collection of resources is a great place to start and offers a variety of books, music, and movies for all ages. You can also support the black community by purchasing these resources from black-owned online bookstores.

Grace Group: Racial Justice Discussion

Explore what it means that Jesus has declared that the acceptable day of the Lord (Is 61: 1-2) had arrived in him (Lk 4:14-21). This group will take a deeper look at what scripture has to say about poverty, justice, policing, imprisonment, and righteousness with a focus on both prayer and service. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 8p on Zoom.

Study the Bible with Us

We have been journeying through the Bible with Rev. Dr. Esau McCaulley through his free online course, Theology in Color, and his book Reading While Black. These resources provide helpful ways to reflect on God's Word and our own assumptions and blind spots as we do.
